Big B’s Blog Strikes Back
Hey everyone,
Do you like how I just assigned myself a nickname? Actually, I can’t take full credit for that one—my old EGM crew occasionally called me “Big B” while I worked at the mag. But here’s the thing: I could never tell if they meant it as a compliment or an insult (kinda like the “B.I.T.C.H.” nickname MyRes member Blackcat008 had suggested). Anyway, moving on....
So Where You Been?
It’s been a hectic few weeks for the Insomniac community team…err, make that the entire studio. As some of you already know, we’ve been prepping Resistance 2 for some upcoming media events (poor James—as I write this, the guy is in screenshot-capturing hell). I, however, have been neck-deep in the MyResistance.net redesign (thanks again to those MyRes members in the San Francisco area who offered up their feedback). While Ryan, Corey, and the rest of the gang already had a pretty amazing vision for the website before I arrived at Insomniac, I’m still making contributions and suggestions here and there.
The past few weeks also generated some feedback regarding the first Resistance installment. Basically, we rounded up a bunch of fans and asked them the usual stuff: what they liked/disliked/wish-list for the future. Now when asking for honest opinions, you have to prepare yourself for some negative comments. And even though some of the feedback was less than glowing, these sessions definitely reassured us that we’re addressing the right stuff in the sequel.
Resistance 2 Update
Now don’t get me wrong—it hasn’t been all work and no play since my last blog post. I also logged some serious hours with Resistance 2, participating in several 6o-player battles. The mode’s dynamic objective system is starting to come along, and I’m really digging the tweaks we’re making to the control scheme. This setup is anything but final, but we’re definitely headed in the right direction (I actually have a hard time now going back to R1’s button layout). And after hearing Jake Biegel, R2’s co-op lead designer, discuss this mode on the Full Moon Show podcast, I’m absolutely determined to set up shop in our QA department for some co-op rounds. If this aspect of R2 interests you (and how could it not?), I highly recommend downloading this week’s show.
And speaking of the podcast, we had another special guest on Episode 25: My former boss and Editorial Director of the 1UP Network, Mr. Dan “Shoe” Hsu. Even though he bleeds Michigan maize and blue (disgusting, I know), Shoe was an awesome guest. You’re welcome back anytime, bud!
Niko Bellic and Solid Snake Invade Insomniac
The release of Grand Theft Auto 4, the Metal Gear Online beta—oh yeah, it’s definitely a good time to be a gamer. And the studio is definitely partaking in those gaming pleasures. On Tuesday, a good 20-25 peeps huddled into the R2 multiplayer area to check out GTA4—Rockstar’s open-world opus totally lives up to the hype. Plus, a bunch of us have hopped on the Metal Gear Online beta. If anything, it’s definitely got this die-hard fan of the series ridiculously pumped for MGS4’s release. I’ve even joked with Ryan that I’ll be calling in sick on June 12 (the day of the game’s release). But am I really joking? We shall see....
