The Unspoken

Logging in to your Oculus account, you may notice something new under The Unspoken. What’s this? Achievements? Why are they locked?! Well, let us explain!

Coming on February 28 in Arcane Update 2.0, we’re introducing a brand-new progression system. The system includes ranks and arch-mage titles to reward longevity and skill–can you ascend from Novice to Supreme… and beyond?

We’re also introducing achievements that reward class- and artifact-mastery. There’s an achievement for every class and play style. You’ll work towards class-specific achievements for the Anarchist, Kineticist, and Blackjack–and new classes, on the way very soon!

Why are they showing up and why are they locked? We are turning these on now for testing, so you will see them in the Oculus app, but they will be locked until the new Arcane Update goes live. We will have more information on that update, including all the changes that are coming, soon. Tune in Friday, February 24, on Twitch for an early look.

Don’t forget to join us TODAY at 5pm Eastern / 2pm Pacific / 10pm UTC in Ranked during our weekly Play with Dev event.

Greetings Acolyte,

A mist swirls across snow-covered city streets. A forgotten channel flows into the south branch of the Chicago River. The prohibition-era mob favored these waters for their grisly and efficient disposal properties: a body dumped here submerges quickly and does not resurface.

The veil is thin in this place. The council approves its concealment and preparation. Introducing the Lockport Bridge Arena!

Icy drawbridges frame two home pedestals, each offering access to pillars with high and low vantage points. Spellcasters are in close proximity as the match begins, able to see each other clearly, all the better to predict their opponent’s next move. The victorious play their opponents like a fiddle–they manipulate expectations with feints.

Feints use the element of surprise to keep rivals on their heels. A hammer echoing in the night need not forge a spear. A summoned Chaos Skull is easily cancelled before it is cast. And a conjured deck of Wildcards moves along with an Arch-Mage, all the better to catch an enemy at a vulnerable moment. Advanced Spellcasters use deceptive movements to trick their opponent into teleporting prematurely, or diverting focus, or casting at an inopportune time. Every Ember is precious; so it is vitally important to maintain razor-sharp perception, in tune with an opponent’s true intentions.

Nothing compromises perception more effectively than the newly sanctioned Dark Tag Artifact! This spellbound spray-paint can, stencils mystic paint traps to obscure an opponent’s vision. A tagged spellcaster is exposed to deadly homing spells, unable to counter or dodge—the Dark Tag stacks well with every offensive spell.

Lockport Bridge is the most dynamic arena in the underground circuit. Freezing winds from across the lake form ice columns in the channel, changing the fundamental topology of this battleground. Pedestals with wide sight lines become sheltered coves, vulnerable from only a few opponent positions.

As the storm intensifies, and after every column is formed, a Summon Orb manifests beneath the bridge. Breaking it unleashes the spirit of a hapless victim, drowned long ago. Impossibly thin ice freezes around his extremities to form the Bridge Wraith—a vengeful grotesque hell-bent on entombing its victim in an icy sheath. If you find yourself rooted, your time on this plane is drawing to a swift and bitter end. Better luck next time.

From across the lake, the wind changes. Electric lights flicker. Spellcasters of a new cloak will soon join the duel.

Until then, remember: fortune favors the shrouded. Remain hidden!

Ever Watching,

theunspoken-hand-wt

Happy New Year everyone!

In the meantime, we wanted to jump online with you! We are going to start playing weekly sessions from the studio. We will post the days and times at the start of each month.

For January, we are starting today! Jump online during the times listed and look for usernames that include the “insom_” prefix.

Thursday, January 26 @ 3 pm Eastern / 12 pm Pacific

We will be live streaming on January 26th from our Twitch Channel. Tune in for a first look at all the new content coming in the first update!

As always, we are listening to your feedback. Please let us know in the comments below. Or post on the Oculus subreddit, The Unspoken Discord channel, Twitter or Facebook.

Greetings Acolytes,

We’re watching you. We can see you slip through the veil and into dark back alleys, abandoned factories, and concealed gardens. Power flows through you, and your ascent is staggering to behold.

Do you want to know a secret?

We’ve just begun.

Arcane Updates throughout 2017

Throughout 2017–from the beginning of the year to the end–we’re revealing more of the hidden Chicago. We’re updating The Unspoken with new everything–and we’re evolving the duel itself with help from Spellcasters all over the world.

That means you.

New Arenas

A fog rolls in across the lake. New Arenas coalesce in the mist, with dramatic layouts and dynamic pedestals. Peer into the future with this sneak peek at a concept image:

New Cloaks

Soon, you’ll have the power to change the physical appearance of your Spellcaster. Attentive Acolytes witnessed these new Spellcaster forms during our Facebook Live stream. Behold concept images here, rendered with the gloved hand of a Sage:

New Classes

Each class carries new Primal Spells, Gesture Spells, and play styles. Three practitioners of ancient magics are available at launch. These represent but a few of the myriad techniques of spellcraft. The full array of classes is shrouded in mystery for now–new Spellcaster classes arrive in 2017!

New Artifacts

Soon, you’ll find new Artifacts in your Curio Cabinet. A skillfully cast artifact can turn the tide of battle; careful selection can seal your victory. Ancient Artifacts are uncovered throughout 2017.

New Modes

Learn the art of the duel. Live the lifestyle of an Arch-Mage. But take heed: the duel is a living thing.

New modes of play arrive in 2017. The very nature of Spellcasting will evolve, even as the 1v1 duel lives eternal.

And there is more

Soon, we’ll release better ways to watch and stream The Unspoken. The spectator mode shows all-seeing views of the duel, with an information overlay for informed viewing. And integrated streaming tools grant the power to communicate with those in thrall. We brought The Unspoken to ESL One in Brooklyn, and Intel Extreme Masters Oakland. And stay tuned: soon, we may be coming to an event near you. The Unspoken is amazing to play—and amazing to watch.

In 1893, the Exposition revealed the promise of magic. In 2017, it rises again. The wait will be short. The Unspoken expands early next year and through every subsequent season.
We are listening. Please share your feedback. Help us shape the unseen. What do you like? What do you wish to change? Let us know here in comments, speak invocations on Facebook, chant on Twitter, leave glyphs on Reddit, or summon us telepathically.

Ever Watching . . . and Listening.

Greetings Spellcaster,

Your nimble casting is duly noted. Your impeccable technique transcends a mere parlor trick; your fingers brush knife-thin constellation lines to manipulate perception itself. Sleight of hand is your calling card as The Blackjack!

blackjack_square

The Blackjack taps into the illusion magic of the street hustle to wield deadly blades with speed, precision, and otherworldly grace. These Primal Spells are yours to master:

  • Direct deadly Spectral Knives with uncommon accuracy.
  • Counter opponent spells with your compact Mystic Shield.

Cast these three gesture spells:

  • With a push gesture, spin a razor-sharp Disc of Blades and direct it toward impossibly small targets with the pinpoint precision of your gaze. Spin the blades longer to shatter shields and cover points.
  • With a volley gesture, manifest two hands of explosive Wildcards that arc around cover. Send one line of cards, teleport, and then send a second line to trick your opponent with a difficult-to-counter one-two attack.
  • With a guard gesture, summon Spectral Cloaks to conceal yourself. Teleport from point to point unseen while your opponent frantically breaks shields to find your position. Charge your guard spell fully to place more Cloaks and absorb more damage before shattering.

With carefully directed blades, your damage-per-second is second to none. But your health is low. Use your Spectral Cloak to stay hidden while you prepare an offensive gesture spell, reach for a devastating artifact, or assemble a Guardian effigy.

Your skill at breaking Embers is unsurpassed. Direct blades around cover to target your opponent’s most fortified positions. leaving your enemy exposed while you slip in and out of the veil.

Overwhelm your opponent’s senses with a Spectral Cloak, followed by an Aerogramme. Then pick off the dazed Spellcaster with fully charged Spectral Blades. Or try even more esoteric tricks: hoard your Embers for multiple arcs of opponent-seeking Wildcards.

Take note: your Disc of Blades will quickly break a Summon Orb or dispel a Guardian. But your victory hinges on your ability to misdirect. Use your skills wisely, and remain concealed!

Greetings acolyte,

The statue of Endless Vigilance overlooks a traffic circle near Butcher Heights. Here, beneath the grey-brick Romanesque facades of old Chicago, there is a palpable restlessness, a trace of some unseen presence.

In the shadows of this arcane centrum, Spellcasters engage in high-stakes duels in Pulaski Circle! In this close-quarters arena, there is little margin for error. Offensive spells land quickly across the short distance. Casting fully charged spells takes time, so it’s crucial to find a sheltered position to perform a Gesture or cast an Artifact. Here, Volley spells are particularly effective at rooting out your opponent—and Push spells are devastating when cast immediately after an opponent teleports to the exposed side of the arena. Keep an Ember at the ready for a reactive Guard spell. A quickly cast guard can be the difference between victorious life and death from a surprise attack.

The circular layout promotes thoughtful teleporting. Pedestals are arrayed around a central occluding statue, with open sightlines and protected positions that alternate with every teleport–players can effectively hide from each other for brief intervals. On each side, one position is low and protected, but exposed to attack from a single elevated pedestal. Every move to target your opponent can be countered with a move to a better position; Pulaski Circle pedestals are the most interdependent of first-wave arenas.

Monuments rise up from the nineteenth century cemetery plot buried below the manicured lawn. Cover points grow sturdier. One pedestal rises even higher as the match escalates. And if a player cracks the Summoning Orb, the spirit of Endless Vigilance rises up from the grave to relentlessly pursue a victim. A skillful Spellcaster might counter The Reaper, but at what cost?

Stay hidden as you seek the ascendant path, and perhaps your name will be inscribed in the ledger.

Ever Watching,
