Fantasy of the Familiar

The concept of “Fantasy of the Familiar” began as my attempt to explain why certain parts of our games had a lot of appeal with players even though those parts didn’t seem any better or more fun than other parts. It seemed that many things in our games, such as the hockey match in Spyro 2, resonated with players because of “what it is”. In these situations the whole was simply much better than the sum of the parts. Over the years I started seeing this same phenomenon at the macro and micro level of almost every successful game on the market. Eventually I had to give it a name just so I could discuss it more easily. In retrospect the term “fantasy of the familiar” does sound a little dorky. The concept would probably catch on better if it had a short, sexy name that made you sound smarter just by saying it. However, the name does summarize the essence of the concept pretty well, so for now I’m sticking with it. (But seriously, if you have any ideas please send them my way.)
