As for the one-off thing... when you say "the value at (i)"... I think I was picturing that in practice the body of that loop would be placed at the end, following on after whatever it was one wanted to do with the unswizzled coordinates. In other words, at the top of the loop x and y ought to match those given by unswizzle8(i).

And you're quite right... the new version is only good for scalars.
